Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
